The Church in San Miguel

Hola. Soy Wendy.

One of the greatest delights of living in San Miguel de Allende has been meeting the members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In fact, even walking to the church has been a magical experience. Beautiful plazas, parks and gardens, cobble stone streets, colorful banners, and to top it all - the name of the street we walk to get there is called Calle de Jesus Nazareno!!!

Because we weren't quite sure which ward are supposed to be attending, we decided it best to go and just ask them, Tuesday and Wednesday. Much to our delight, both nights the whole ward was there! Tuesday evening turned out to be the other ward, but they invited us to participate with them anyway. Then on Wednesday night we found our own ward, no less inviting. Tess and Kate learned primary songs to sing and played with playdough, Ruth learned how to conduct music and was taught a traditional Mexican dance, Daniel visited with the men in the elders quorum, and I attended a class on canning (which was fantastic) and played basketball with the Relief Society!! Everyone has been SO WELCOMING. And now I know a really cool trick to protect your grains in 2 liter bottles by dipping a cotton ball in alcohol and lighting it on fire!

They invited us to join them next week to Mexico City to attend the temple with them. We hope very much to make that happen.

We continue to treat ourselves (mainly me, who is enjoying a break from cooking) with delightful Mexican food. Here are a few pictures of our favorite meals.

The hot chocolate in the photo above was heavenly! But what has been even more heavenly has been our time spent together as a family. The girls are so easy to homeschool and we are spending lots of time together walking and exploring the city. The public library is just around the corner! We have been enjoying reading bilingual books, in addition to the books we brought on our tablets/Kindles.

Daniel has lunch with us every day, and is always just in the other room working when we need him. Add to that family scripture study and prayer. Life is so good!

Anyone who knows our family knows how much we value learning, faith, and family. Over the years I've learned that it is fruitless to compete with the world. Breaking away from our day to day (i.e. dance classes, school, traffic, sports, shopping, cleaning, television, car and home maintenance, etc...) by living a much simpler life in Mexico has been so sweet. We will treasure these moments for the rest of our lives.
